A GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet shuts off power in a fraction of a second when it senses current leaking to ground, protecting people from shock. The National Electrical Code (NEC 210.8) requires GFCI protection in bathrooms, garages, outdoors, unfinished basements, laundry areas and at kitchen countertops.
What to look for:
-
15A or 20A: 20A GFCIs have a T-shaped slot for 20A plugs (Leviton GFTR2, Legrand 2097TRW, Eaton TRGF20W)
-
Tamper-resistant (TR): required in homes; shutters block objects pushed into the slots
-
Weather-resistant (WR): for damp and wet outdoor locations (Leviton GFWT1, Eaton TWRGF15W)
-
Dead front: GFCI protection with no plug slots, for protecting a circuit from a convenient spot (Legrand 2087W)
